Reberto Ferraris with his wife and son in Agliano Terme The estate was established in 1923, when Roberto’s grandfather, Stefano Ferraris, planted vines in a natural south-southwest facing limestone amphitheater in Agliano Terme, in the heart of the Barbera d’Asti zone. Today, there are nine hectartes (about 23 American acres) under vine. The steep exposure, and now very old vines, not to mention the impeccable farming, results in concentrated, flavorful grapes, most of which are fermented and matured in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.

Elio Grasso at his home in Barolo If there is any Barolo producer who perfectly embodies the idea of stewardship of his heritage, it is Elio Grasso. He was working in a bank in Torino in 1978 when his grandfather died, leaving him a small cascina and a few giornate of vines on the Gavarini and Ginestra hills of Monforte. Elio promptly quit the bank to become a wine grower. Today he still works every day in the vineyard, preferring to leave the cellar and business to his son Gianluca, The estate is one of the top producers of Barolo.

Vinhos Barbieto is one of the most outstanding producers on the island of Madeira. Matt Cline in the old vineyards of OakleyAlong with Joel Peterson at Ravenswood in Sonoma, and Paul Draper at Ridge Vineyards in Santa Cruz, Matt Cline was one of the original champions of single-vineyard, old-vine Zinfandel. Before establishing Three Wine Company in 2006, Matt was a founding partner of Trinitas Cellars (which he sold in 2006), and had worked with his brother Fred at Cline Cellars since 1982. Along the way, he has quietly produced some of the most dramatic red wines ever made in California, mostly from grapes purchased under contract with third and fourth generation farmers of ancient parcels in Oakley and Lodi in Contra Costa County.

Jean Fillioux

Among the very best of the small "grower-producers" of Cognac, is Pascal Fillioux proprietor of the small firm, Jean Fillioux. Pascal is the fourth generation of Fillioux to carry the tradition since the firms founding in 1880. Pascal’s vineyards lie in the very heart of the Grande Champagne district. Pascal personally oversees, (if not performs) every aspect of production: harvest, fermentation, distillation, aging, blending and bottling. Pascal is rather self-effacing and modest and he will be the first to tell you that though he has years of experience making Cognac, he still learns everyday and a lifetime is simply not enough.

Laurent Combier in his vines Maurice Combier purchased the Domaine's original 10 hectares of vines north of Pont-de-l'Isère in 1962. During the 1960s, he had an allergic reaction to a chemical used in fruit orchards and vineyards to fight plant diseases. In an experiment, he adopted organic farming in half of his property to learn the processes necessary to keep the fruit healthy, naturally. By the 1980s, the entire estate was transformed to organic farming, and sold their fruit to the cooperative at Tain l'Hermitage. In 1990, when son Laurent finished oenology school, they left the cooperative and have made their own distinctive style of Crozes-Hermitage ever since. Certified biodynamic farming, low yields, hand-harvesting,and rigorous selection are at the heart of his graceful wines.

One Of These Is Wine. The Other Is Not.

One Of These Is Wine. The Other Is Not.

Sounds rather pedantic, no? But imagine this: Say one of the bottles is "Ragù Tomato Sauce," and the other is a jar of fresh marinara form a little old lady in Italy, made from her own tomatoes. Same difference. The bottle on the left was produced by a person farming his own fruit. And over the growing season he was constantly in the vineyard thinning leaves and making sure each grape met optimal ripeness. The fruit was harvested by hand, and taken to the winery with great care, where it was hand-sorted to make sure only the ripest fruit went to the crusher. This bottle of wine also states who grew, produced, and bottled the wine, as well as where this all took place. The bottle on the RIGHT tells us nothing about where the fruit was grown (other than a vague "Napa Valley" AVA). The technical details are spelled out on the bottle. "Optimum Brix" (a measure of sugar in the grapes) is listed (proudly) at 25 degrees. More on this in a moment. Soil type is listed as "alluvia
