In Memoriam: Gianni Piccoli

Meet the Winegrowers Terry Moore

We are sad to share with you the news of the passing of Gianni Piccoli, the founder of Corte Gardoni. Agronomist, viticulturist, winemaker, and passionate defender of authenticity, Gianni Piccoli’s beautiful wines have been prominently featured at Moore Brothers for more than two decades. You probably know them yourself. Agronomist, viticulturist, winemaker, and passionate defender of authenticity, Gianni Piccoli’s beautiful wines have been prominently featured at Moore Brothers for more than two decades. You probably know them yourself. More than that, he was our dear friend. And no one at Moore Brothers was closer to Gianni than my friend and colleague, Joe DiLuzio, who would receive a bi-weekly phone call at the shop from Gianni to chat about current events, gossip about his neighbors, and either celebrate or lament a recent performance by his beloved squadra di calcio, AC Milan. If one of us answered the New Jersey store phone to a poor connection and a raspy voice on t

Andreas sharing a laugh with visitors in the towering Uhlen vineyard. Andreas von Canal is the grandson of the last Freiherr von Heddesdorff. His family has grown Riesling in Winningen since 1454, on steep, terraced vineyards near the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine, just upriver from Koblenz. The estate includes two hectares of the Winninger Uhlen, one of the steepest vineyards in Germany, and small parcels in the Brückstück, Röttgen, and Domgarten (the Archbishop’s Garden). His four hectares of slate vineyards, all planted with the Riesling grape, located at the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhein always give well-extracted, spicy and bright wines.

Domaine Henri Germain

Henri Germain in Meursault Domaine Henri Germain was established in 1973 when Henri, brother of François Germain of Château de Chorey les Beaune set out on his own. His son Jean-François is now in charge, though Henri continues in the vineyards. Most of the production comes from the premiers crus of Beaune, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet, including Beaune Bressandes, Meursault Perrières, and Chassagne-Montrachet les Morgeots. Only a tiny quantity of the white and red Bourgognes are made, both from sites in the commune of Meursault. Farming is natural, and winemaking is traditional. The Germain wines are not usually flashy, but are classic, long distance runners.

Richard, Anthony, and Pascal Jaume in Vinsobres The modern history of this eighty-hectare estate in Vinsobres began with Henri Chauvet and Baron Le Roy, who together introduced the idea of “appellation contrôlée” in France in the 1920s. Henri Chauvet’s son-in-law Pierre Jaume was the driving force in the development of the estate, but it was his son Claude who was the first to estate-bottle the wines. Grandsons Pascal and Richard took over in the 1980s, and have continued to enlarge and improve Domaine Jaume; with carefully considered purchases like the vineyard they call “Altitude 420,” and the “Clos des Échelas.”

Anne Sery in OregonAnne Sery Martindale was born on the island of Réunion, an overseas French Department in the Indian Ocean about 450 miles east of Madagascar. Her father was a diplomat and a serious collector of Burgundy, so the family dinner table often featured bottles from producers like Ghislaine Barthod, Christophe Roumier, and Louis Boillot, which sparked Anne’s own passion for Pinot Noir, and led her to pursue winemaking as a profession. In 2008, after graduating from the Faculté de Bordeaux, where she studied with the famed enologist Denis Dubourdieu, Anne moved to Oregon, and continued her training with Laurent Montalieu at Soléna Estate in Yamhill. Currently, Anne is a winemaker at NW Wine Company in McMinnville, which gives her access to some of the best grapes in Oregon, as well as a state of the art facility for custom winemaking.

Catherine Thibon and Nestor Jean-Pierre Thibon’s family has operated the Mas de Libian in Saint-Marcel d’Ardèche since 1670. He and his cardiologist wife, Jacqueline, have three daughters: Hélène, Catherine, and Cécile. In 1995, Hélène, Catherine, and Hélène’s husband Alain Macagno assumed responsibility for viticulture and winemaking, and began to estate-bottle the wine, rather than sell it in bulk to négociants. Long before it was fashionable, the Mas de Libian was an organic farm, and in 2005 Hélène introduced the demanding practice of biodynamics. Catherine does much of the vineyard work herself, with the help of “Nestor,” a charming Comptois draft horse who is encouraged by his canine stable mates “Sophia” and “Éclair.”

Hervé and Diane Joyaux Fabre Hervé Fabre came from a family of wine négociants in Bordeaux. When he arrived in Argentina in the early 1990s, he was surprised to find that nearly every other investor in Mendoza’s wine renaissance was buying undeveloped land and planting new vineyards. They were ignoring the old vineyards of head-trained Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been established a hundred years earlier by émigrés from the Southwest of France. Hervé quietly bought them up, and today, these ancient vineyards surround his beautiful winery in Vistalba – Lujan de Cuyo, near the town of Mendoza. He also purchased old vineyards in Patagonia, where he produces magnificent Malbec.
